Powell, lying in northern Knox County, is a mixture of both rural and suburban lifestyles. The quietness of rural living combined with the accessibility of urban entertainment and shopping makes this area a popular place to live.
This small unincorporated community was first settled in the late 1780s by pioneers who found good farmland with enough water supplied by Beaver Creek. Powell is bordered by Oak Ridge on the west, Knoxville to the south, and Clinton on the northwest.
You will find a variety of housing from mobile home parks, larger older homes, and also new subdivisions. Several large retailers have stores here, including Wal-Mart and Target, along with a multitude of smaller locally-owned establishments. Weigel’s, the large convenience store chain, makes its headquarters in Powell.
Knox County Public Library recently built a new 12,000-square foot branch here. Powell Station Park, which caters to kids and dogs, has fountains, a playground, benches for the moms, and picnic tables under a pavilion.
Powell High School recently received an A+ in academics, attendance and test scores. Their average SAT scores rank above the national average, and they have been recognized by the State of Tennessee as one of the state’s best high schools.
