The City of Maryville is located in Blount County, also home to Alcoa, Friendsville, Louisville, and Rockford, to name a few. This area is just a few minutes down Maryville Highway from downtown Knoxville and an easy drive to the University of Tennessee up the Alcoa Highway.
The City of Maryville is rich in history dating back to pre-Civil War times. Fort Craig was founded here to defend against Indian attacks. General Sam Houston grew up here and taught school in a one-room schoolhouse (still standing today) before he began his military career. Maryville is named after Mary Grainger Blount, the wife of the territorial governor, William Blount.
While Maryville has grown up as so many cities have and lured businesses and customers to modern malls on its outlying areas, it has still retained its historic buildings in the downtown. The city is working hard to revitalize its inner core, and is improving the public areas through grant projects.
Maryville is home to Blount County Memorial Hospital, as well as Maryville College and Foothills Mall. The population is greater than 25,000 and the city covers 15 square miles. A wide variety of housing can be found in Maryville from mobile home parks, starter homes, and mid-priced homes up to large mansions with acreage.
